Jersey Girl is an eight year old quarter horse who joined our family on January 15th 2013. She is about 14.3 hands. She lives in Jamaica Bay Riding Academy in Brooklyn, New York. She loves to jump and has an extensive show record. She is a typical mare and loves to test people. When we bought her we decided to tell our daughter the bad news that she was sold to someone else and that we needed to go to the barn to look at other horses. When we arrived there her trainer told her that she was going to take her to see another horse that was brand new. Her trainer decorated Jersey Girl’s stall with a sign and bows. When Raquel realized that we owned her the look of surprise and then realization was priceless.
Jersey Girl (whose barn name is Sahara, and I affectionately call Sasa) loves to eat. Her favorite foods besides hey and grain include carrots and watermelon. Though, the sound of anyone opening a wrapper gets her excited. She lives inside in a stall but gets turned out every day. Her neighbor and friend is an Arabian flea bitten gelding , named What the Hey, who calls for her whenever she leaves her stall.
Jersey Girl loves to roll in the dirt especially after she has been bathed or groomed. She loves to play in turnout. She hates flies though and will run back and forth along the fence screaming to go inside when the flies are out. She really loves to be showered. Since her home has beach trails she also loves to go to the beach and go in the ocean. She loves drinking the salt water.
When we had a heat wave she was sweating so much that we had to put fans up in her stall. I could not understand why the batteries were not lasting very long, until one of the other boarders sent me a text telling me that Sahara was turning her fan on and off by nudging it with her nose.
